What is IMA

IMA is the associate designation accorded to qualified Internet marketing practitioners. Accreditation is earned by demonstrating a minimum level of experience and/or education as determined by the CIMBS Committee, combined with a passing grade of at least 65% on the I.M.A. exam. An IMA designation certifies that you possess the tactical competence required for entry and mid-level Internet marketing positions.

Requirements

To qualify for accreditation of the IMA designation you must meet the following requirements:

  • Successful completion of the IMA exam, with a passing grade of at least 65%.

AND, either:

  • Successful completion of an Approved Education Program: This involves learning the profession's Common Body of Knowledge through an educational program approved by the CIMBS committee. Currently, the UBC Certificate in Internet Marketing, the UBC Certificate in eBusiness, and the BCIT Associate Certificate in Electronic Commerce are the only approved programs, however, other programs are under review and will be posted to this site upon approval.

OR:

  • Equivalent work experience: If you have not completed a recognized certification program, but have been working in the field of Internet marketing and business strategy, you may apply for the IMA designation based on your work experience. You must demonstrate at least 2 years of direct internet marketing experience or 3 years experience in either traditional marketing or internet related roles.

The following programs are CIMBS certified:

  • BCIT Associate Certificate in Electronic Commerce
  • UBC Certificate in Internet Marketing
  • UBC Certificate in eBusiness

Continuing Education: the CIMBS committee requires that applicants submit course information with their CIMBS application, including the name of the institution, the course outline, and proof of attendance and where applicable, proof of having fulfilled requirements for successful completion of program.

Internet Marketing or Business Strategy Positions: Examples include owning or managing an Internet business. Position titles might include: CEO, CIO, Manager Internet Marketing, Manager Strategic Alliances, Business Analyst, Project Manager, etc.

Maintaining Your IMA Designation

Your IMA designation does not expire. You will be included in the IIMA's online directory of accredited professionals as long as you maintain membership in good standing with the IIMA. You may also apply to upgrade your certification to achieve full CIMBS accreditation at any time, as long as you meet the necessary experience and education requirements as defined by the CIMBS committee.

How to Apply

Once you are certain you qualify for your IMA designation, applying is easy.

  1. Complete the online application form and pay the application fee of $110 (IIMA members) or $255 (non-member).
  2. Submit any requested supporting documentation by email or regular mail.
  3. Take the IMA exam and achieve a passing grade of at least 65%. (Should you fail to achieve 65% on your first attempt, you will have the option to re-take the exam within 60 days on payment of a $75 exam fee.)
  4. You will be emailed verification of your certification and your IMA certificate will be sent to you via regular mail.
